Earth Day check list: recycle old electronics, shred documents, save the planet.

Don't just dispose of files. Shred.

Alright, admittedly that’s a bit of an oversimplification, but LifeStorage is dedicated to not just helping out its tenants, communities, and charity organizations, but also in giving back to the planet. We’re holding our Third Annual Earth Day Shredding event at our facilities in Aurora, Mokena, and Wrigleyville on Friday April 20th and Saturday April 21st, from 9am to 5pm each day. LifeStorage Aurora and LifeStorage Mokena are offering half-price shredding for each file box brought in, costing only $5 per box. LifeStorage Wrigleyville is offering 20% off normal shredding costs per box.

LifeStorage Libertyville is also offering the shredding services on Saturday April 21st. In addition, they will also be holding an Electronics Recycling Event on that day as well. Interested parties can bring in computers and computer peripherals (keyboards, mice, and monitors), televisions, stereo equipment, gaming consoles, microwaves, and more. They’re even recycling bicycles at the event too!

These events provide anyone who’s interested the perfect opportunity to properly dispose of your unwanted electronics devices, to create a better piece of mind by having your secure documents shredded and securely handled, and also help the planet through the recycling efforts. The shredding is affordable and will help business owners and individuals free up space and ensure their sensitive paperwork doesn’t fall into the wrong hands, helping eliminate the possibility of data fraud and identity theft.

It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved, and LifeStorage helps celebrate Earth Day in a way that will make everyone feel like they’ve done their part!

For more information on what types of electronics LifeStorage Libertyville is accepting, please call 847-367-0001. To find more information on LifeStorage, please visit www.lifestorage.net.

Green your Space, Green your Life in Honor of Earth Day!

Reduce waste. Go green!

Earth Day is coming up, and it’s a time when we remember to be more “green.”  Of course there are so many ways to green your space and storage all year round, so do your part to go green with our easy tips below.

Recycled Storage Containers – With the amount of storage people do, making sure your storage is green is very important. Buy storage containers that you can use over and over again. By buying containers that you can use again, you’re reducing waste. Want to go a step above that? Get recycled storage containers like this one from Office Depot. These can be used in your storage unit or home storage and reduce the impact you’ll have on the environment.

Have a Garden – One of the most obvious ways to go green is to grow your own food. In a climate like Chicago’s, your options may be more limited than other climates would be, but you can still grow some delicious food. Your Chicagoland Storage Facility is the perfect place to store your gardening tools in the seasons you won’t need them, making it even easier and more convenient to go green. With having a garden it makes sense to invest in a compost bin to store vegetable peelings, coffee grounds, eggshells, greens and other food scraps. Compost is a great solution for the soil in your garden.

Cleaning Supplies – Along with the organizing and storage comes the cleaning aspect. Many household cleaners contain chemicals that are bad for the environment. Know what’s in your cleaning supplies and be conscious of the chemicals you use. Try one of the natural cleaners made from vinegar and the citrus peel. You can make it yourself and it works great leaving your space smelling fresh.

Differentiate Your Storage – One of the best ways to “green” your storage solutions is to make a distinction between what you keep stored at home and what you keep in your storage facility. If you make sure the items in your storage unit are items that you won’t need for a while, it will prevent having to drive back and forth to your unit to get any items you need. By cutting back on the driving to your storage unit, you are lessening the impact you have on the environment.

Have Fun with Colorful Storage.

These color containers are fun!

Who says storage has to be mundane? Brighten up your storage around the house with decorative storage solutions and containers. It’ll make storage more fun for the family, and it can even help color-code your in-home storage or storage facility.

For Filing Solutions, colorful folders in your filing cabinets can brighten up your storage and help to distinguish where certain documents are more easily. If you want to make the colors more visible in your home, consider filing in colorful boxes like these from The Container Store.

Colors are also very helpful when storing items for children. Colorful baskets and bins can help a child discern where items go and can even make cleaning up more fun for kids. The Land of Nod has many different shapes, sizes and colors of baskets for storage. Walmart also has a fun and colorful storage shelving and bins for kids.

Colors aren’t the only bright change you can make to your storage! You can also get a pattern on your bin or container. There are variety of different patterns like this polka dot basket from Walmart.

Target also has some great colorful options for storage, like this printed storage bench or rolling storage drawers.

Have fun with color containers!

There are plenty of colorful storage solutions out there for you, you just need to pick out what suits your house and needs best! Don’t think these colorful solutions are just for the home though. By using different colored boxes and containers in your storage unit, you’ll be able to color-code your storage and find items more easily!

Don’t Fool Your Storage Solutions.

What can you fit in this box?

April Fool’s Day is right around the corner, but don’t let faulty storage tools fool you. Not all storage solutions are a one size fits all. Sizing, compartments and the way you organize your stuff all contribute to how successful a storage container is, so make sure to choose wisely.

When you need a storage container, it’s important to get the right size for what you are planning to store. If the container is too big, you may be tempted to throw extra stuff in there, which could unravel your organization. If your storage container is too small, you won’t be able to fit everything in the container that you need, or, if you’re like me, you may try to cram too much into the container, which is a big mistake when trying to organize.

You also want make sure the compartments in the storage container coincide with the size of the items you’ll be storing in it. If you’re storing extra blankets, for example, you don’t need compartments in your storage container. For smaller items though, you want to have compartments because if you don’t, it will be hard to find the small items that are all mixed together.

The last item that could be playing April Fool’s jokes on your storage solutions is the person you see in the mirror. That’s right, you could potentially sabotage your own organization efforts. Avoid that by sticking to keeping your organization intact and putting all your stuff in their set places. Force yourself to stick with your original storage plan or commit to changing it when needed.

With your storage solutions avoiding sabotage, you can save your fooling for your friends. Of course if you need to store some of your fooling supplies so you don’t get caught, stop by your storage unit at LifeStorage for some extra space.
